The Story of Southwest

The mission of Southwest Trading Post, since it’s inception, has been to support the Native American Indians by purchasing Native American jewelry and crafts direct from them to share in our store in the quaint village of Skippack, Pennsylvania.

Butch and Beth experienced the restorative power of the Native American culture the first time they visited the Southwest many years ago. Their journey started when they volunteered at Mother Teresa’s Soup Kitchen in Gallup, New Mexico. Their desire to learn about the Native American culture and craftsmanship became apparent to both of them…and resulted in purchasing handcrafted items for gifts back home — directly from the artisans they met on the reservation. They soon became members of the ANA (Americans for Native Americans) to take part in philanthropic efforts that helped clothe and feed Native Americans.

Because we believe in the healing spirit behind the American Indian culture, we want to educate our customers on these holistic remedies with crystals, medicinal teas, oils and music. Even more, we want to educate our friends on the Native American way by teaching our community about the traditions, folklore, crafts and culture of the American Indians.

Word began to spread about their generosity, which led them to the St. Mary’s Parish in Lower Bruel, South Dakota. They adopted this community as their own and organized several drives to gather clothing, food and other necessities (over a period of 20 years)…yet there was something more that they were meant to do.

When the couple had an idea for a store in 2001, Butch found Skippack, a treasure of a village near their home in the Northeast Pennsylvania. They liked Skippack because it was unlike some other commercial suburban areas they had looked at. It even reminded them a bit of the reservation community, with “mom and pop” shops and restaurants, all owned by individual entrepreneurs, all sharing and cooperating in a communal way.

a real live experience of the Indian reservation

At the same time, the couple began to take notice, in the surrounding tri-state area, many shops were closing that sold authentic Native American Indian items.  Sure, there were many online stores specializing in these handcrafted items, but they yearned for something more.

So Butch and Beth began to create a one-of-a-kind trading post that would bring not only the authentic beautiful craft of Native Americans to Skippack, but also the down-to-earth philosophy, spirit and restorative power of this culture to a group of people in need of a grounding, healing force.

Once they found just the right building, Butch and Beth blessed the space and set out to bring the experience of the culture to life within their store through music, artwork, native american jewelry and crafts plus healing therapies.

Butch went back to the reservations to purchase the goods for the store. He soon found that, by visiting the reservations to purchase the one-of-a-kind crafts, they were able to sell their products at a lower price by eliminating the middle man. In doing this, they make sure the products are authentic and the Indians receive the money directly.
